The Healthy Corner Store program, funded by the Onondaga County Health Department (OCHD) and TCI, is providing easier access to healthy foods by transforming local stores and making healthier items more visible. Nearly a dozen corner shops and small retailers in Syracuse –particularly those that are within 1,000 feet of schools – received mini-grants and technical assistance to update the store.

Stores like Hawley Market, Thanos Import Market and Sabatino’s Pizza Deli and Grocery now prominently display fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy, granola bars, nuts, trail mix, whole grain products, and bottled water. They offer healthy pre-made sandwiches and salads, and use special tags on shelves to make these products more visible to shoppers.
