TCI launched a pilot program with Onondaga County Public Library’s White Branch in Syracuse’s Northside and the Mundy Branch in the near Westside to improve kids’ access to safe exercise and help combat childhood obesity by making sporting equipment more accessible. Together, they made a variety of equipment available for patrons to sign out. And more than 3,000 items have been checked out!

The equipment – including basketballs, baseballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, soft bouncy balls for younger kids, beach balls, Nerf balls and hula hoops – was donated by employees of St. Joseph’s Health, the YWCA’s Soccer for Success department and Syracuse University Recreation Services.

This program has been so successful that Franklin Elementary School decided to offer the same service to its students. TCI hopes to launch similar programs at other SCSD schools in the future.
